Dr Martens x Isabel Fletcher

The brief for this commission was to create an installation at the Dr Martens Brewer Street Flagship store to celebrate the craftsmanship of the ‘Lowell’ shoe. I focused on extracting the bold stitching from the shoe into linear strips of leather to contrast the fluid, curved shapes on the shoe which are picked up in the draped sections of offcut leather. Dr Martens and I have a shared love of stitch, which was key to the creation of this artwork.

To create the artwork, I had the pleasure of using the machinery at JT Batchelor in Dalston, London to cut the leather sections. As well as connecting with the craftsmanship of the Dr Martens shoes, this project enabled me to also connect with the skill of the team of leather workers at the JT Batchelor. Thank you Karing, Gemma, Emma and Suzy.
